Abstract

This article examines the history of scholarly research on the Nayman tribe, which occupies an important place in the ethnic composition of the population of the Jizzakh Oasis. It considers the origin and semantic meaning of the ethnonym “Nayman,” the internal subdivisions of the tribe, and the geographical distribution of its constituent groups. Particular attention is devoted to the role played by the Nayman tribe within the ethnic environment of the Jizzakh Oasis, as well as to the processes underlying its formation and historical development. Drawing on historical and ethnographic sources, the article offers a comparative analysis of the scholarly perspectives and approaches that have been applied to the history and ethnocultural characteristics of this ethnic group.
